Cozumel Currents, Snorkeling and Diving

On Cozumel’s western coast, the predominant current flows from south to north, creating the famous “drift dives” that make the island a world-renowned diving destination. For scuba divers, this current is a major benefit, as it carries them effortlessly along the vast reef system, allowing them to cover more ground and observe an abundance of marine life with minimal physical exertion. For snorkelers, the currents in the calm, sheltered shallows near the coast are typically mild and suitable for beginners. However, snorkelers and divers should always be aware of the currents, as they can pick up quickly or vary in strength at different sites, especially farther from shore. Two things to watch out for: the cruiseships created currents and of course, the natural currents.

Cozumel Cruiseship Schedule

Dont snorlel, swimm, or dive around the port early am or late afternoon! These cruiseshps create strong currents that can keep you from getting back to shore. You can check out the Cozumel cruiseship schedule https://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/cozumel-port-26

Free Apps and Websites for Checking Currents Around Cozumel

Cozumel, located in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, benefits from global oceanographic tools that provide real-time or forecasted surface and tidal currents. These are particularly useful for snorkelers, divers, and boaters to avoid hazards like those from cruise ship activity. Below is a list of free apps and websites (with free tiers) that cover currents in this region. I’ve focused on those confirmed to include the Caribbean/Mexico via global or regional models. Note: Some apps have optional paid upgrades, but basic current data is accessible without cost.
