Puerto Morelos is a town and seaport located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. It’s situated on the Yucatán Peninsula and is about 36 km (22 mi) south of Cancún and 30 km (19 mi) north of Playa del Carmen. Despite the recent building boom in the area, Puerto Morelos has managed to maintain its small-town feel. It offers a variety of restaurants and bars but is mainly known for its shallow Caribbean waters that attract visitors. It’s a great spot for big game fishing, snorkeling, and diving.
The Mesoamerican Reef is one of the main attractions in Puerto Morelos. It’s part of the larger Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is the second-largest coral reef system in the world and spans over 600 miles from Isla Contoy in Mexico to the Bay Islands in Honduras. The reef in Puerto Morelos is known for its vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. The National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos was established to protect and preserve this natural wonder.
